HAMPTON, Ga. — Jeff Gordon dominated much of the rain-delayed AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Tuesday and then won a duel with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson for his third Sprint Cup Series win of the season.

Gordon held about a 2-second lead with 20 laps remaining, but Johnson, who rallied from early struggles, closed on Gordon’s bumper with 11 laps remaining. He then dogged Gordon over the final 10 laps, trying repeatedly to get by his teammate.

Atlanta Cup Race Postponed until Tuesday says Mike Helton

September 4, 2011 Comments off

Mike Helton: Yeah, unfortunately we’re going to have to reschedule because this last rain that set us back, we’re now predicting it will take three to three and a half hours to dry. which means it will be 12:30 or 1 o’clock in the morning before we could start, which is just not reasonable to do. That along with the forecast that everybody that does that professionally around here universally agrees that for the next 36 hours starting sometime later tonight it’s about 100% chance in this area with more than likely three, four, five inches of rain, high wind and all the things that create dangerous situations with weather. We’ll have respect for that and reschedule this race to start at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning.

Dale Jarrett: I would have to say, this doesn’t change the Richmond schedule whatsoever though. These teams are very well-prepared to be ready to be there on Friday and going?

Edwards holds off Kyle Busch for 35th Nationwide win in Atlanta

September 3, 2011 Comments off

HAMPTON, Ga.—Polesitter Carl Edwards held off Kyle Busch during a frantic final 10 laps of Saturday night’s Great Clips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and, despite a pit-road penalty early in the race, notched his sixth Nationwide Series victory of the year and the 35th of his career.

Busch, who chased Edwards to the checkered flag after passing Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for second place on Lap 186 of 195, was the runner-up, .697 seconds behind Edwards. Stenhouse, the series points leader, came home third, followed by Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne.

After regaining the lead from Harvick following a Lap 177 restart, Edwards stayed there and held a comfortable advantage until Busch cleared Stenhouse for second.
