Dover’s Sprint Cup Race Ends First Half Of Regular Campaign

miles-the-monster-nascar-sprint-cup-june-2012Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway marks the halfway point of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. When the checkered flag falls on the FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks just 13 races remain until the lineup for this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ is set. A year ago, nine of the top 10 in points leaving Dover qualified for the Chase. Only Kyle Busch (ninth) missed the post season.

Fire Up The Toaster, Championship Field Down To 10; Likely To Further Shrink In Phoenix

Championship Field Down To 10; Likely To Further Shrink In Phoenix
Texas eliminated two Chase qualifiers, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. More are likely to follow on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. The mathematical cut-off with one race remaining is 49 points. Only Keselowski and Clint Bowyer (-36) currently are within that window. Fourth-place Kasey Kahne (-58) must net 10 points on Johnson to take his slim title hopes to the Nov. 18 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Phoenix likely will end reigning champion Tony Stewart’s bid for a fourth crown. Stewart is eighth, 80 points off the lead.

FYI WIRZ: NASCAR’S Chase Has Shrunk Top Contenders To Three For Last Two Races

by Dwight Drum at Racetake.com

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series has a season 36 races long that begins in winter and stretches about one month short of the start of the next winter. But that long schedule is down to two races with only three of the top leaders with a good shot at winning the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

With 96 total points up for grabs, only two of 12 contenders are mathematically eliminated, but seven of that dozen are 58 to 83 points back with little chance of advancing.

Driver Point Standings After Talladega – Chase Race #4

Talladega Superspeedway The Ultimate Wild Card Chase Race

Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 Truly A Wild Card Chase Race

This is “wild card” weekend to say the least. Chase qualifier or not, anyone in the 43-car field is a contender for Talladega Superspeedway’s checkered flag. Since the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ began in 2004, four of the eight fall Talladega winners – Dale Jarrett, Brian Vickers, Jamie McMurray and Clint Bowyer – came from outside the Chase field. The eventual NASCAR Sprint Cup champion has never won the fall Talladega race in the Chase era.

Seven of this year’s 12 Chase qualifiers (Bowyer, Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon) have a ‘Dega victory. Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex Jr., Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth are still looking for one. A member of this year’s Chase field has won 10 of the past 13 races at Talladega Superspeedway.
