Carl EdwardsDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2009) – The media have spoken, and it predicts Carl Edwards will end Jimmie Johnson’s championship stranglehold.

In a media poll asking members of the media to forecast 2009’s final top 12, Edwards received almost twice the first place votes as Johnson. Edwards finished with 70 first-place votes, compared to Johnson’s 37.

Despite his proven dominance in winning three consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series titles, Johnson could not muster a majority of the support from the 198 voters who cast a ballot.

“It is an unreal compliment for 70 [media members] to think that I will win it all,” Edwards said. “It’s just great. What Jimmie has done is spectacular. For the media to say they think that I might be able to stop that is pretty neat.”

NOTE: Kerry Murphey from The Final Lap voted for Jimmie Johnson to win his 4th Cup Championship in a row.

Nationwide Series LogoEdwards, Busch Are Double-Duty Favorites
Last season’s series champion Clint Bowyer won’t run enough races this year to defend his crown. But if Carl Edwards, the 2007 champion, is able to muster a fraction of last year’s comeback karma, he should be a favorite to become the series’ seventh two-time champion.

Edwards, who has always been a full-time driver in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, is one of two double-duty drivers who will vie for the 2009 championship.

Kyle Busch has done just about everything in the NASCAR Nationwide Series except win the title, and he’ll go for that this year. He won the series’ Raybestos Rookie of the Year in 2004, and last year won 10 races in three different cars, finishing sixth in the standings despite running only 30 races. The 10 victories tied the record set by two-time champion Sam Ard in 1983.

Camping World SeriesNew Look, Same Tough Trucks
After 14 years with Craftsman, 2009 ushers in a new look as Camping World joins the Truck Series as the title sponsor. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will feature the same tough competition, as veterans and young up-and-coming drivers alike compete for the coveted series championship.

New Team for Defending Champ
Johnny Benson managed to edge Ron Hornaday Jr. by seven points for the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series title in what was the second closest championship battle in series history. Benson will be defending his title with a new team, as he and crew chief Trip Bruce made an off-season move to Red Horse Racing.

Benson will also attempt to become the first back-to-back champion in series history.

Count On Hornaday For 2009
Three-time series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. will no doubt be a threat for 2009. After finishing second to Benson in a last lap battle for the championship, the veteran driver would like to add an unprecedented fourth series title to his resume. Hornaday will once again drive the No. 33 Camping World/Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Chevrolet with crew chief Rick Ren.

Bodine Looks to Become First Daytona Repeat Winner
Todd Bodine, the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, is looking to begin the new season just as he did last year, in Victory Lane. Bodine and his No. 30 Germain Racing team are the defending winners at Daytona International Speedway. Should Bodine find himself with the checkered flag on February 13, he would become the first repeat winner in the series at the famed track.

Braun Racing For A Golden First
Colin Braun, the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year, will be striving to reach a couple of milestones in 2009. The 20-year-old Roush Fenway Racing sophomore has two goals in his sights — his first career win and Roush’s 50th victory in the series.
