Rusty Wallace ESPNRAY EVERNHAM: I can give you my opinion. If you’ve got a guy that’s running the whole series and he’s racing sometimes and he’s got a week that he just can’t afford it and he has to do a start and park, but 75, 80 percent of the time he’s racing, you can deal with that. But I don’t really care for the guys that come in there and they plan to do a start and park. I think those people are taking out of the sport rather than giving to it, and I just don’t like it.

RUSTY WALLACE: I agree with you totally. I’m a little vocal about this. Again, if the guy has got plans to compete in this series and puts some good racing on for the fans and help build the great name of NASCAR by racing, that’s one thing. But if they’re going to come in like Ray just said and just go find a car and just get in and as soon as they make one lap just pull out, grab the money and go home, yeah, it’s a business, it sure is, but for the guys that are out there competing every single week and working like crazy to find sponsors like all of us are and have that happen, I don’t like it.

GORDON BACK TO WINNING WAYS AT MICHIGAN?

Jeff GordonBROOKLYN, Mich. (August 11, 2009) – Glad that an “easy” track is next up on the schedule, Jeff Gordon may have a great chance to get back to Victory Lane at Michigan International Speedway.

Video: Violent Watkins Glen Wreck

On Monday, Gordon was involved in a frightening accident at Watkins Glen International when Sam Hornish’s Dodge slid into a tire barrier then spun directly into the path of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet. The violent hit certainly did not help Gordon’s already aching lower back. “My back is stiff today, but I’ll be fine and ready to go this weekend,” Gordon said Tuesday afternoon. “Luckily, Michigan is up next and it’s been pretty easy on my back in the past.”

In 33 starts at the Irish Hills track, Gordon has two wins, five poles, 16 top-fives and 21 top-10’s. In June, after starting from the rear of the field due to an engine change, Gordon finished second to teammate Mark Martin in the 400-mile event. “We had a great car here in June and, after starting from the back, we were in position at the end of the race to battle for the win,” said Gordon, who is third in the standings, 342 points behind leader Tony Stewart. “We’ve performed well on the intermediate tracks this year, so we’re definitely looking at this race as one we can lead laps, run in the top five and hopefully be in contention for the win.”

Mark Martin Aims for Back-To-Back Wins At ‘Comfortable’ Michigan

Mark Martin wins MichiganReturning to Michigan International Speedway, Mark Martin (No. 5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Chevrolet) is going for back-to-back wins and what would be his fifth trip to Victory Lane at the track he calls “comfortable.”

“I think about Michigan and I think: ‘Ahhhhh, that will be fun’,” Martin said. “It’s always been a great race track, and our car ran really well up there for the first race.”

Fuel mileage was Martin’s best friend this past June when NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers took to the two-mile oval.
