It looked like Kevin Harvick had breezed past the competition to lock his place in the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a stirring performance this past week in the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Harvick won in dominating fashion as he swept all three stages of the race.

However, NASCAR announced on Wednesday that the No. 4 Mobil 1 Ford Fusion was not quite up to spec, and was popped with an L1 penalty when the car was inspected at NASCAR’s Research and Development Center. Somewhere along the way our NASCAR drivers got soft.

Long gone are the days of Red Byron bouncing down a rut-filled clay short track with a leather helmet. So too are the days of Petty and Pearson literally crashing each other for a Daytona 500 victory, while Dave Marcis shined his wing tips. Cale, Bobby and Donnie’s epic fist fight that thrust NASCAR into a mainstream sport, seems like it would never be possible in today’s buttoned up sport. And Dale Earnhardt? Forget about it, no sponsor these days would touch him.

Sunday afternoon at Texas Motor Speedway, played out like a Southwest Airlines advertisement. You know those television ads where someone makes a horrific blunder in front of the entire world and as they freeze to look at the camera you hear, “Wanna get away?” NASCAR’s sanctioning body had this type of moment during pre-race inspection for the AAA Texas 500.

Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team rolled their car through tech and failed a couple of times. However, the third time through inspection was a charm and Johnson was set to chase his first win in what has been a frustrating year for the seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fireworks singed into the clear Texas sky after a hectic overtime restart at Texas Motor Speedway. Kevin Harvick became the latest championship contender that was revealed for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championship race in two weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway, as the No. 4 Ford Fusion capped off a dominating performance with a victory in the AAA Texas 500.
But while Harvick was busy tasting the spoils of victory, another driver hoping to contend for the title, Martin Truex Jr., caught his breath after a feverish effort to save his championship hopes after a trying afternoon at the 1.5-mile speedway. FORT WORTH, Texas — Following Friday night’s JAG Metals 350 at Texas Motor Speedway, one of the favorites for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship, Noah Gragson stood in disbelief over how badly his night went. Gragson was noticeably peeved with his hands on his hips. His face was red from where his helmet had been pressed against his skin for nearly two hours, and his eyes were slightly teared up.
