CONCORD, N.C.— In a race that ran according to form, Clint Bowyer beat AJ Allmendinger to the finish line by 2.547 seconds Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as the drivers finished 1-2 in the Sprint Showdown and advanced to Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

Jeff Gordon, who has three Sprint All-Star race wins in his illustrious career, trails only his teammate Jimmie Johnson (four wins) on the all-time win-list in this prestigious dash for the cash event which has been a fixture on the schedule since 1985.

Although Gordon hasn’t won this event since 2001 (13 years ago), he may have his best shot in years to reach victory lane on Saturday.
