In a strange turn of events that has to have Texas Motor Speedway track president Eddie Gossage feeling that someone took his new slogan of “Wild Ashpalt Circus” a little too literal, a parachuter landing in the infield grass as a part of the prerace festivities has apparently damaged the No. 29 Chevrolet that Kevin Harvick is scheduled to race with in less than two hours.

The weight that is attached to the parachuter apparently got tangled in the flag that was being flown from him as well, and that caused the ‘chuter to go off track, and into the side of the No. 29 car.

Harvick tweeted a photo of the damage, along with the following:

“Never good when the day starts with a parachute weight hitting our car… Welcome to 2012….”

The Richard Childress Racing team has pushed the car back to the garage where they will begin repairs in a never before seen set of circumstances. Now only if the AAA Texas 500 can be as wild as the prerace ceremonies we are in for a treat.

There is a new superstition that point leader Jimmie Johnson has utilized since last week in Martinsville. When he posts the fastest time in qualifying, he doesn’t exit his car until he’s either knocked off the pole, or he officially is the pole winner. His superstition is now two-for-two as he takes his second straight pole, and fourth pole of the year.

Is there any doubt that former Formula 1 Driver, Nelson Piquet Jr., has figured out this NASCAR thing? Friday at Texas Motor Speedway the Brazillian driver took home his third pole position of the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. He was also the only driver to break the 180-mile-per-hour bracket.

Points leader James Buescher who holds a 21 point lead over Ty Dillon with just two races remaining will roll off the grid from the second position at his hometrack. Continue reading “Nelson Piquet Jr. Cruises To Third NCWTS Pole Of Season; Point Leader Buescher Starts Second”

The first practice session of the weekend at Texas Motor Speedway is in the books, and round one of the weekend goes to Martin Truex Jr. and Michael Waltrip Racing. Truex ripped off a lap of 190.745 mph, which was quick enough to top his teammate Mark Martin who ran a laptime of 190.449 mph. Truex has be oh-so-close to visiting victory lane all season long, and it appears he has a car that may be fast enough to contend for the win yet again.

Clint Bowyer, the third Michael Waltrip Racing car, clicked off the fourth fastest lap of the session. Bowyer who sits third in the championship standings, 26 points behind the point leader had a lap of 189.857 mph. The other guy who has slipped into the championship picture is Kasey Kahne, who is now just 29 points out of the championship lead. Kahne was eighth-fastest in the first tune-up of the weekend. It remains to be seen how long Danica Patrick’s fourth crew chief in her young NASCAR career lasts, but one thing is for sure nobody has seemed happier to assume the position of her crew chief than Tony Gibson. Patrick will make her first start with her new crew chief this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, and it will be her ninth Sprint Cup Series start of 2012.

Gibson is very confident in his driver’s abilities, and thinks this could be a good race for the Roscoe, IL-native.

“Yeah it’s good. The communication side of it, her hearing my voice on the radio and working with her and finding out this is one of her good tracks. I’ve done some research on that, she really gets around here pretty good. Hopefully, we won’t screw it up and we can give her something good to drive today,” said Gibson. “To get any kind of time in is crucial. Not only on a communications side, but as far as the balance of the race car we have to learn. We don’t want her to adapt to our set-ups we want to adapt to her driving style. These two races will be crucial in gaining a head start on that. So over the winter time we can make plans and do some testing and get further on down the road for us.
