In a strange turn of events that has to have Texas Motor Speedway track president Eddie Gossage feeling that someone took his new slogan of “Wild Ashpalt Circus” a little too literal, a parachuter landing in the infield grass as a part of the prerace festivities has apparently damaged the No. 29 Chevrolet that Kevin Harvick is scheduled to race with in less than two hours.
The weight that is attached to the parachuter apparently got tangled in the flag that was being flown from him as well, and that caused the ‘chuter to go off track, and into the side of the No. 29 car.
Harvick tweeted a photo of the damage, along with the following:
“Never good when the day starts with a parachute weight hitting our car… Welcome to 2012….”
The Richard Childress Racing team has pushed the car back to the garage where they will begin repairs in a never before seen set of circumstances. Now only if the AAA Texas 500 can be as wild as the prerace ceremonies we are in for a treat.
FYI WIRZ: NASCAR’s top four Chasers hope for top results at Texas
The NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup is down to simple math: Three races remaining, 144 potential points with only one of the top four Chase leaders likely to take the prized No. 1 NSCS trophy. Two drivers are perched on peak, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski just two points apart.
As with all great sports the math keeps adding up. This Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway drivers will wheel their stock cars at an average speed of 145 mph or more for 500 miles or 334 laps on the 1.5-mile quad-oval with 24 degree banking. Fans without tickets for one of the 122,377 seats can tune into ESPN at 2 p.m. ET.

There is a new superstition that point leader Jimmie Johnson has utilized since last week in Martinsville. When he posts the fastest time in qualifying, he doesn’t exit his car until he’s either knocked off the pole, or he officially is the pole winner. His superstition is now two-for-two as he takes his second straight pole, and fourth pole of the year.

Is there any doubt that former Formula 1 Driver, Nelson Piquet Jr., has figured out this NASCAR thing? Friday at Texas Motor Speedway the Brazillian driver took home his third pole position of the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. He was also the only driver to break the 180-mile-per-hour bracket.
