What do most people think about when they think about Texas motor speedway?  A cookie cutter 1.5-mile oval? A repave disaster? A boring race?

How about one of the biggest events for a huge demographic?

Somewhere along the way our NASCAR drivers got soft.

Long gone are the days of Red Byron bouncing down a rut-filled clay short track with a leather helmet. So too are the days of Petty and Pearson literally crashing each other for a Daytona 500 victory, while Dave Marcis shined his wing tips. Cale, Bobby and Donnie’s epic fist fight that thrust NASCAR into a mainstream sport, seems like it would never be possible in today’s buttoned up sport. And Dale Earnhardt? Forget about it, no sponsor these days would touch him.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. comes into Saturday night’s Bass Pro Shops night race at Bristol Motor Speedway in an unenviable position – the first man outside the cutline for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

The 30-year-old driver currently sits 62 points behind Hendrick Motorports driver Alex Bowman. Stenhouse could erase that point deficit over the next three races, but it is highly unlikely that it will happen. But if Stenhouse were to win one of the three remaining regular season races the Olive Branch, Mississippi native would leapfrog his way automatically into the post season. While most of the buzz in the NASCAR Xfinity Series this season has been about how Joe Gibbs Racing’s young phenom Christopher Bell looks like he’s ready to move to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Justin Allgaier has continued to chalk up results like he has throughout his eight full-time seasons in the NXS ranks.

And this has me wondering: Why aren’t more people talking about Allgaier?

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fireworks filled the warm Texas night sky as Johnny Sauter crossed the finish line for his fifth-career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway. While the mood was jubilant for Sauter and his championship-caliber GMS Racing team, there was a much more somber feeling in the Garage area behind a tiny – by comparison of the other team’s rigs — black 40-foot trailer.

There stood Jordan Anderson, a racer’s racer trying to forge his path to NASCAR Stardom the old-fashioned way, drenched in sweat and noticeably filled with disappointment. The 27-year old stood for several minutes surveying the severe damage to the right side of his No. 3 Chevrolet Silverado race truck, and he wondered alone what could have been.
