Matt Kenseth thinks his Joe Gibbs Racing team—and in particular, team owner Joe Gibbs—was penalized excessively for violations Kenseth characterized as a mistake.

“I think the penalties are grossly unfair—I think it’s borderline shameful,” Kenseth said during a press conference Thursday at Richmond International Raceway.

KERRY AND TOBY DISCUSS #20 PENALTIES ON THE FINAL LAP WEEKLY

After Kenseth won last Sunday’s STP 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR took his No. 20 Toyota back to the R&D center in Concord, N.C. That’s where the sanctioning body discovered a connecting rod that weighed less than the 525-gram required minimum for the engine part.

NASCAR reacted by issuing one of the severest penalties on record, fining crew chief Jason Ratcliff $200,000 and placing him on suspension for six Cup points races. The sanctioning body also docked Kenseth 50 championship points and Gibbs 50 owner points.

2013 Bristol1 March Qual Denny Hamlin On GridJOE GIBBS RACING DRIVER DENNY HAMLIN REMAINS SIDELINED
FOR THIS WEEKEND’S RACE IN RICHMOND

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (April 24, 2013) – Following a medical evaluation on his injured back it has been determined that Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver Denny Hamlin will not race in this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Richmond.

Hamlin suffered an L1 Compression Fracture during an accident on the final lap of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway on March 24. Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates re-evaluated Hamlin this week and it was determined that he would benefit from additional rest and rehabilitation.

Joe Gibbs Racing LogoSTATEMENT FROM JOE GIBBS RACING ON NASCAR PENALTY ISSUED TODAY

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (April 24, 2013) – Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is aware of the penalty issued by NASCAR today regarding the engine in our No. 20 car used in last week’s Sprint Cup Series race in Kansas.

It is our understanding that one of the eight connecting rods on the engine was ruled too light.

We are working with our partners at TRD on this issue.

In the meantime we will plan to appeal the penalty.

EDITORS NOTE: We are guessing NASCAR used multiple scales to weigh these parts, so the appeal process will probably go something like this: (laughing in a mocking manor) Denied! (gavel drops) have a nice day.
