With “Walk-Off Win,” Stewart Takes Third Title At Homestead

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 20, 2011) – Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Tony Stewart went from all-time great to legend, capturing his third career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in grand fashion – a number that places him among a short list of historic NASCAR figures.

With a victory in Sunday’s Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Stewart became the seventh champion to win the season finale in his championship season. He out-dueled runner-up Carl Edwards in a finale befitting a championship showdown, tying Edwards in points – but winning the championship on a tiebreaker. Stewart’s five wins bested Edwards’ one, clinching the title for Stewart.

Stewart won his first championship in 2002 and second in 2005. The Indiana native now joins David Pearson, Lee Petty, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough – all NASCAR Hall of Fame members or inductees – as three-time champions. Nine drivers in NASCAR Sprint Cup history have won three or more championships.

Thirty-five weeks a year, one of the most fun and challenging things about this column is the fact that it can often be quite speculative in nature.

Based on what happened the previous week or month in NASCAR, we have the luxury of utilizing what has gone before in order to predict what might happen next. Each week is an important link in a chain that begins when the season is tossed overboard in February, and ends in November when a champion lands to anchor it for the next 12 months.

But this is Week 36. As of this writing, mere hours separate us from the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and NASCAR’s championship anchor is dangling so close to the ocean floor that the sand is already swirling. After the closest and most exciting year in recent memory, all that stands between this moment and the end of the 2012 season is the simplest of toddler math, countable on a single hand: one race, two drivers and three points.

JEFF GORDON NAMED NASCAR ILLUSTRATED’S 2011 PERSON OF THE YEAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (November 16, 2011) – Four-time NASCAR Cup Series
champion Jeff Gordon has been named the 2011 NASCAR Illustrated Person of the
Year.

Gordon is the first three-time recipient of the award, but this marks the first time
he is the sole recipient. Gordon and Darrell Waltrip were named co-persons of the year
in 1997.  Gordon also shared the title when Hendrick Motorsports was named Persons
of the Year in 2004.

Other past recipients include Joe Gibbs, Mark Martin, Kyle Petty and Tony
Stewart for their influence on the NASCAR community, as well as admirable charitable
efforts.

“We are thrilled to name Jeff Gordon the 2011 NASCAR Illustrated Person of the
Year,” said Jay Pfeifer, Editor of NASCAR Illustrated. “In addition to scoring his 85th
win, third-most in NASCAR history, he took his philanthropy to a new level. By
expanding his fight against pediatric cancer to Africa, Gordon showed that compassion
