A year ago this weekend, NASCAR suspended driver AJ Allmendinger for a violation of its substance abuse program. On the day of the 2012 Coke Zero 400, Allmendinger was replaced in the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford by Sam Hornish Jr.

After completing NASCAR’s Road to Recovery program last year, Allmendinger was reinstated, and his fortunes have improved exponentially since then. Driving for Penske in the Indianapolis 500, Allmendinger led 23 laps and finished seventh.

On June 22, he picked up his first NASCAR victory in the Nationwide Series race at Road America. Driving for Phoenix Racing on Thursday afternoon, Allmendinger was fastest in opening Sprint Cup practice, topping the speed chart at 200.218 mph. He and Clint Bowyer (200.214 mph) were the only drivers to exceed 200 mph in the session.

ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. – How do you find just the right gift to say “thank you” to a man who seemingly has everything?

That’s the dilemma A.J. Allmendinger has faced since billionaire team owner Roger Penske gave him a second chance to redeem himself following last year’s embarrassing suspension for violating NASCAR’s substance abuse policy.

Saturday, Allmendinger finally found the way. It took two green-white-checker restarts and five extra laps (55 in total), but he easily earned both his first career NASCAR and Nationwide Series win in the Johnsonville Sausage 200 Presented by Menards at Road America.

during 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Season in the No. 47 Toyota Camry

HARRISBURG, N.C. (June 8, 2013) – – 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte will share seat time with AJ Allmendinger in the No. 47 Toyota Camry fielded by JTG Daugherty Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the remainder of the 2013 season. The team is currently eyeing five races with the first taking place in the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway Sunday, June 16.

The move is being made by the single-car operation to help refine the direction for the team’s development of the Gen-6 Camrys housed in their Harrisburg, N.C. shop.

“Bobby Labonte wanted to help our team grow and develop when he signed on with our organization at the beginning of the 2011 season,” stated JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Brad Daugherty. “He continues to do a tremendous job for us. Bobby has given us his ideas for improving the product and we believe AJ will do the same.”

Stated JTG Daugherty Racing competition director Bobby Hutchens, “A single-car team does not have the benchmarking capabilities of all the multi-car operations we compete against each weekend. This move will help us identify where our cars stand so that we can go to work on the next generation of our car design.”
