Somewhere along the way our NASCAR drivers got soft.

Long gone are the days of Red Byron bouncing down a rut-filled clay short track with a leather helmet. So too are the days of Petty and Pearson literally crashing each other for a Daytona 500 victory, while Dave Marcis shined his wing tips. Cale, Bobby and Donnie’s epic fist fight that thrust NASCAR into a mainstream sport, seems like it would never be possible in today’s buttoned up sport. And Dale Earnhardt? Forget about it, no sponsor these days would touch him.

Man, what a race Bristol Motor Speedway put on. The race had it all. Big crashes, tight battles all night long, and in the end a driver — Kurt Busch — got their first win of the season.

Not only that, but three more drivers — Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson — did enough to secure berths in the Playoff Grid. With two races remaining 12 of the 16 slots have been filled, which leaves four positions for 18 drivers to battle for.

A year ago, Stewart-Haas Racing went through the daunting task of swapping the manufacturer of their four-car Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series organization from Chevrolet to Ford. It was a move that had the usually potent championship contending team staggering for much of the 2017 season.

The team captured just three victories, and even though Kevin Harvick worked his way into the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, it just felt like a lost season as Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. burned the ground down following his first-career Cup Series title celebration.

Now, in 2018, things have done a total 180-degree turn for the four-car SHR team.
