CORNELIUS, N.C. – Michael Waltrip Racing announced today that Elliott Sadler will drive the team’s No. 55 Toyota in five NASCAR Sprint Cup races in 2012 beginning at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 18.

UPDATE: Remember that whole Elliott Sadler running in a handful of races for Michael Waltrip’s #55 Cup car this year? Yeah, scratch that, he’s had to back out of that deal after being called to Richard Childress’s motorhome at Phoenix. Clearly RC would like his Phoenix-Winning driver to focus on winning this years Nationwide Series Championship, also the whole Chevy / Toyota thing probably didn’t sit will with Richard either.

Sadler will also drive the No. 55 in the August Bristol event, both Martinsville races and the July 15 race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“This is an awesome opportunity,” said Sadler. “We’ve been talking about this for a while, but wanted to get through Daytona before we announced it to everyone. If I had to pick a place on the circuit to start then Bristol would be my first choice. I’ve had a lot of good memories at Bristol. Martinsville is in my home state of Virginia and I’ve always enjoyed racing at Loudon. I can’t thank Michael and everyone at MWR enough for giving me this opportunity.”

NASCAR BECAME A WHOLE NEW WORLD WHEN GORDON/DUPONT ENTERED THE RACE

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (January 21, 2012) “A Whole New World” appropriately was the No. 1 song on the pop charts the year Jeff Gordon came on the NASCAR Cup Series scene in the rainbow-colored Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet and took the motorsports world by storm.

But the irony goes beyond the song title. Gordon’s first Cup Series start was seven-time champion “King” Richard Petty’s final Cup Series start at the season finale in Atlanta in 1992. The torch seemed to be passed that day as Gordon went on to accumulate four championships in his first nine full seasons and now is third on the all-time win list with 85 career victories. David Pearson is second with 105, and Petty reigns with a record 200 wins.
