The last two spring races at Auto Club Speedway have been duels between El Cajon’s Jimmie Johnson and Bakersfield’s Kevin Harvick. Johnson ended up in Victory Lane with the Harvick-dubbed “golden horse shoe” in hand in 2010. Harvick earned the title of “The Closer” a year ago by edging five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Johnson by 0.144 seconds – the closest NSCS finish in the track’s history.

Johnson leads all drivers with five wins at the track followed by fellow Californian and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon of Vallejo with three wins. Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth, who finished second in last weekend’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, the only other driver with multiple wins.

Brendan Gaughan & the Georgetown Hoyas

NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan, who drives the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series and No. 2 Chevrolet 8 Camping World Series, is a former walk-on basketball player for the Georgetown Hoyas, lettering in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Gaughan, who was roommates with Allen Iverson on the road, played on two Big East regular season championship teams, as well as one NCAA Elite Eight appearance.

The Las Vegas native likes Georgetown’s chances when the No. 3-seeded Hoyas open up NCAA Tournament play against No.14 Belmont on Friday. He shares some of his thoughts:

Speedweeks Opener Features Deep And Talented Field

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 14, 2011) – In what could be the deepest and most talented field to date, NASCAR announced Wednesday the list of eligible competitors for the 2012 Shootout.

The 34th annual season-opening event launches Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 18 with a start time set for 8:10 p.m. FOX and MRN will broadcast live nationally. Criteria are based upon the following qualifications, with eligibility based on a driver having been active in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series during the 2011 season:
