FYI WIRZ: Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR top 5 rested for race 6 in Martinsville

Sprint Cup drivers and team members look forward to the few weeks in the long NASCAR Schedule when no race is planned. With a rare week off they can be either rested at home or weary from special vacation activities.

NASCAR’s fifth race of 36, the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway, will roar to life with the green flag on March 24. Action on the 2-mile D-shaped oval track with 14 degree banking in Fontana, California can be experienced from one of 90,988 seats in the stands or viewed on FOX at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The California facility built on 568 acres is one of NASCAR’s longest at two miles. The wide track is favored by some of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers as it facilitates passing high and low with average race speeds of 145 mph plus.

Jimmie-Johnson-Danica-Patrick-Daytona-500-2013-nascarThe big crap-shoot and gala speed-fest, the Daytona 500, is over and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship run has begun. This Sunday, Mar. 3 the NSCS heads to the much smaller 1-mile, 11 degree track at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz. But the racing won’t be little in any way.

Fans without tickets or a spot on nearby hills can tune into FOX at 3:00 p.m. for fast action on the recently repaved tri-oval at Phoenix.

After the first race some of the usual suspects in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship returned to the top of the point standings. Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson noted how relieving it is for him and team to not start out the season in the hole with a DNF. Even though the No. 48 team always seems to find ways to climb out of a position deficit, it’s certainly good to start the season with top points in the championship bank.
