Fresh off the final open weekend on the NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule this season, Elliott Sadler and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., prepare to battle it out in the Lone Star state where both drivers will be looking to take home their second cowboy hat.

Sadler holds the advantage in the championship standings with a six-point lead over Stenhouse with three races remaining. And for all intents and purposes, this is a two-horse race. But lurking in the shadows is Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Austin Dillon, who has proven he can win in bunches, especially at 1.5-mile tracks, which make up two of the last three races. Dillon sits 26 points out of the standings lead.

The championship battle between Elliott Sadler and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is down to the wire with five races remaining and statistics show Charlotte could prove to be pivotal. In 11 starts, Sadler has only led one lap to Stenhouse’s 34 laps in six starts.

Despite not topping the laps-led category Sadler has proven he knows how to get around the 1.5-mile oval speedway with three top-five and four top-10 finishes.

Stenhouse won the pole at Charlotte in May of 2011.
Sadler increased his lead over Stenhouse to nine points following last month’s race in Dover. Stenhouse holds the second spot followed by Austin Dillon (-25), Sam Hornish Jr. (-60) and Justin Allgaier (-128).

Despite leading 377 more laps than Elliott Sadler to date this season, last year’s champion Ricky Stenhouse remains on the outside looking in with five races remaining.

A solid fourth-place finish at Dover allowed Sadler to increase his lead over Stenhouse to nine points. Stenhouse Jr. holds the second spot followed by Austin Dillon (-25), Sam Hornish (-60), and Justin Allgaier (-128).

The battle between Sadler and Stenhouse is destined to go down to the wire with both having victories at upcoming tracks on the schedule. Sadler won earlier this season at Phoenix International Raceway while Stenhouse took home the trophy at Texas Motor Speedway.

As the races wind down on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule, so is the drivers’ patience.

Elliott Sadler holds a 19-point lead over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the championship standings but the duo left Bristol less than happy with each other. Sadler – who finished second to Stenhouse in the 2011 championship showdown – vowed in his post-race comments to race the Roush Fenway Racing driver differently in the final 10 races of the season.
