JIMMIE JOHNSON OVERCOMES ENGINE ISSUE DURING PRACTICE

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After opening Friday’s final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Kansas Speedway with a mock qualifying run, Jimmie Johnson brought his No. 48 Chevrolet to the garage with smoke billowing from the cowling between the hood and windshield.

BRAD KESELOWSKI: I don’t really think there is anybody in the wings. I think the way this year’s package has kind of come together, where we are right now is where we’re going to be for the remainder of the year. You might see some small gains from some teams but I don’t see anything significant coming. I think right now the Penske cars are probably the best when it comes to balanced track to track. The Hendrick cars are probably the best where it takes power to run. These tracks are certainly one of those, and Kevin Harvick, his team is probably the fastest week in and week out. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Kaboom!

First it was the engine in Bobby Labonte’s Phoenix Racing Chevrolet.

Then, in short order, the engines of Tony Stewart’s and Danica Patrick’s Chevys failed in spectacular fashion, trailing white smoke as they expired.

The common denominator? All three engines were supplied by Hendrick Motorsports, and the failures were unwelcome complications to Stewart’s return to racing after injury and to Patrick’s quest for a second straight Daytona 500 pole.
