AxaltaAXALTA COATING SYSTEMS TO GO 24 WITH NO. 24

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Axalta Coatings Systems, formerly DuPont Performance Coatings, not only launched its new brand this week, it today announced a three-year contract extension with the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team through 2016.
In its 21st year of sponsorship, Hendrick Motorsports and Axalta will reach an extraordinary 24-year partnership. Currently the longest running driver, owner and sponsor combination in NASCAR, the partnership with driver Jeff Gordon has four NASCAR Cup Series championships and 87 NASCAR Sprint Cup wins to their credit.
Axalta will have primary positioning on the No. 24 Chevrolet for 10 races for each of the next three years and will continue its associate sponsorship status for the remaining races.

Kurt Busch at DaytonaTony Stewart isn’t the only previous NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion outside the top 10. Jeff Gordon is 16th; Kurt Busch 18th. Gordon, like Keselowski, crashed out of the Coca-Cola 600 while Busch finished third – possibly losing victory when the battery in his No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet failed while leading. Like his younger brother Kyle, Busch’s 2013 finishes have been all over the map – three top fives offset by five finishes of 30th or worse. Gordon’s luck has been no better – a pair of thirds and five finishes 20th or worse. Gordon has four Dover victories; Busch one.

jeff-gordon-kansas-1-2013CHARLOTTE, N.C.(May 20, 2013) – In Jeff Gordon’s 700th career start at Darlington a few weeks ago, the 87-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner notched his 300th career top-five. But what does he remember about his third career top-five – a runner-up finish to Dale Earnhardt – in Gordon’s first attempt in the 600-miler at Charlotte Motor Speedway?

Not much.

Gordon, whose first race in NASCAR’s premier series was the season finale in 1992, began his rookie campaign with a fifth-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500. In March, he would secure his second top-five with a fourth-place finish at Atlanta. Seven races later – and several crashes later – Gordon would post his first of 65 career second-place finishes when he followed “The Intimidator” across the line here 20 years ago.
