FYI WIRZ: NASCAR’s Top Chasers Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards and more on Kansas

It’s a common motorsports consensus. Some seasoned drivers and their teams feel they do better on mile-and-a half tracks, even though each facility offers different characteristics. Six such tracks—Chicago, Kentucky, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Texas and Homestead—host Chase for the Sprint Cup races and the latter five are yet to be finalized in season 2011.

The next challenge is the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway presented by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) on the 1.5-miles tri-oval track with 15 degree banking in Kansas City, Kansas.

Harvick Owns Lucky No. 2
Though Kevin Harvick lost the points lead at New Hampshire, he might like this position a little better once hearing these numbers.

During the Chase era (2004-Present), the points leader after the second Chase race has never gone on to win the championship. In four of the seven previous Chases, though, the driver in second after two Chase races did go on to win the championship – including Jimmie Johnson in each of the last three seasons.

Clicking off position-after-position at the end of Monday’s Chicagoland race, Harvick reiterated his standing as the series’ top closer.

It also padded what is the second points lead of his Chase career. Harvick now leads the points standings by seven points over Tony Stewart. Only once has Harvick ever led the points during the Chase – after the first Chase race in 2006.

This is the second time Harvick has led the points this season. The first was after the July Daytona race.

The Wonderful Pistachios 400 at Richmond International Raceway promised bumping and grinding on the 0.75-mile track as drivers raced for their last chance for a berth in Chase for the Sprint Cup championship Saturday night.

Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski were locked into the Chase before the green flag. The final three spots were secured by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. Earnhardt and Hamlin overcame wrecks to get in.

Wild-card spots were secured by Keselowski and Hamlin, but the real wildness seemed to be between Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson.
