Michigan was a drought-buster for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in June as the driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 Chevrolet snapped a winless streak of 143 races. Earnhardt is one of four drivers ranked in the top 10 entering Sunday’s race with multiple victories at the 2.0-mile superspeedway. Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin also have two victories apiece. Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart has won once as has Kevin Harvick, one of two drivers among the top 10 still winless this season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. remained perfect in New Hampshire with his 19th consecutive lead-lap finish, a record to start a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Junior’s fourth-place finish was his eighth top five, the most he’s posted since 2008 when he had 10 for the entire season.

Earnhardt also moved up a position in the standings bypassing Greg Biffle for second place. He trails leader Matt Kenseth by 16 points.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been problematic for Earnhardt – especially since joining Hendrick Motorsports. His best finish for HMS, 12th in 2008, came in his first season with the organization. He was 16th a year ago after leading seven laps.

Stewart, who is known for mood swings that produce upbeat, funny plus sarcastic comments, added, “This morning, they were celebrating his fourth anniversary of his last win, so I guess we are all in a state of mourning now because he’s broke that streak.”
