Kyle Busch, 12th in NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, holds the No. 1 “wild card” position but after that it couldn’t be closer among three contenders for the final entry into the post season. Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Joey Logano each have a victory and have scored an equal number of points – 463. Were the second “card” to be awarded today it would go to Kahne. Why? Because the NASCAR Rule Book breaks ties by comparing drivers’ best finishes: If wins are equal, then seconds, thirds etc. come into play. That’s how Tony Stewart edged Carl Edwards for last year’s title. Kahne’s second-place finish at Kentucky Speedway serves as the current tie-breaker to Newman’s (third) and Logano’s (eighth) next best performances.

Edwards, who won the Daytona 500 Coors Light Pole in February, could render the deadlock moot by winning Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola. Edwards currently is 11th in the standings working on a victory drought of 50 races.

Biffle Nabs Top Spot With Personal Triple Crown

With Chassis No. 777 in Las Vegas, Greg Biffle rolled his third consecutive third-place finish to start the season and take over the points lead for the second time in his career (the first was following Sonoma in 2005). Biffle credits crew chief Matt Puccia for helping him attempt to become the first driver to win all three national series titles. To lead the points, Biffle and the No. 16 3M team needed a leader and has found it in Puccia. “Just plain and simply, Matt Puccia is the reason why we’re running and competing and finishing where we are,” Biffle said. “This team needed leadership. He was willing to step up and take the task on. Done a fantastic job so far.”

Johnson, Busch Battle For Points Lead
Though in less than a month, the points positions will be shuffled, it’s interesting to note who sits at the very top right now.

Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson sit in a points tie for the number one spot, a points lead that officially goes to Busch because of his series-leading four wins.

But even though that tie will evaporate once the points reset after Richmond, these just might be THE two drivers to watch. Johnson is the five-time defending champion, and Busch is often at the top of the list entitled “Who Can End Johnson’s Reign.”
