Day Two: NASCAR Preseason Thunder At Daytona International Speedway
Second Day Features Adjustments To Rules Package

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2012) — As with any test, especially one as important as 2012 Preseason Thunder at Daytona, getting it right and being open to make adjustments is key.

After the late afternoon practice session on Thursday, NASCAR announced changes for today’s test session with an increase in the diameter of restrictor-plate openings from 1/32nd of an inch to 15/16ths inches, adding an estimated 26 horsepower to the engines.

In addition, they lowered the pressure relief valve settings from 30 pounds per square inch to 25 psi and narrowed the grille openings of the cars, thereby decreasing airflow to the engine. Both measures were designed to decrease the number of laps one car can push another without overheating.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Crew chiefs of two Michael Waltrip Racing teams and one affiliated program are facing penalties after NASCAR confiscated the front windshields from all three vehicles on Friday.

(from NASCAR.com)

The front windshields from David Reutimann’s No. 00 car, Martin Truex Jr.’s No. 56 car, and Bobby Labonte’s No. 47 car were all taken after they were found to have unapproved modifications, NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said. The violations were discovered in opening inspection at Talladega Superspeedway, site of Sunday’s Sprint Cup event.

MWR fields the cars of Reutimann and Truex, and also builds the cars for Labonte, whose vehicle is owned by JTG Daugherty Racing. All three vehicles are Toyotas. Additional penalties for the infractions are expected early next week, Tharp said.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2011) – NASCAR will implement two rule changes for next month’s running of the Good Sam Club 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

The size of the restrictor plate that teams will use to prepare and practice for the race will increase by 1/64 inch and is now going to be 57/64 inch diameter. This will provide the teams with an additional 7-10 horsepower.

Additionally, the pressure relief valve on the cars’ cooling system will be recalibrated to reduce the pressure by approximately eight pounds per square inch from last April’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega.

“After the last few superspeedway races, we’ve heard many drivers express their desire to open up the size of the restrictor plate some and we thought the time was right to do that,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president, competition. “We anticipate these revisions in the rules package for Talladega will help continue to provide competitive and exciting racing for the fans.”
