The rumors have been flying around that NASCAR planned to swap out the current wing on their Cup Series race car, back to the “older” style spoiler. Cup Series director John Darby sent a memo to teams on Friday that outlines the changes. He said “To help put some of the rumor mills to rest, I am sending you the following facts as they relate to changes for 2010, we will be transitioning from the usage of the current wing to an aluminum spoiler.”
NASCAR plans to hold a meeting with teams in mid-March and run a test with the spoiler at Charlotte Motor Speedway on March 23-24th. At the moment there has not been a race date selected to begin running the spoiler, but the most likely candidate is Martinsville.
The current car, or previously known as The Car of Tomorrow has never run under race conditions using a spoiler. This means teams will need to send this car to the wind tunnel, adjust their set-ups, as well as test the cars on the race track. On thing the spoiler is supposed to do, is create less downforce, putting the control of the car back into the drivers hands. Theoretically this should provide more exciting racing. Only time will tell, and it will be interesting to keep track of.
